Back at Vanderbilt

Jonathan here again.

Over the past few weeks, April’s breathing has become more of a struggle. She has gone from hiking near Telluride, CO in June to needing O2 constantly at home, and unable to walk any distance.  This is likely due to GVHD (Graft vs. Host Disease – the new immune system that hunts any cancer is now attacking April’s body).

During one of her regular appointments on Thursday, the decision was made to admit her for the weekend to perform a battery of tests: CT, Cardio, lung biopsy, X-rays, etc. The lung biopsy happened around 5 pm yesterday. Unfortunately, her right lung collapsed after the procedure. This is fairly common (1 in 250), and we hope to have the chest tube removed in a day or two. Her pain is extreme, and we’re now trying to find the right balance.

We expect to be here through the weekend, and possibly a little of next week. April’s Mom and I are switching off, and that is very much appreciated. Unfortunately, April won’t be able to be at our oldest’s 14th birthday party tonight.

Please pray for good news on the biopsy. In this case a treatable viral or fungal infection is a very good thing. GVHD would be a more complicated recovery process. We are still trusting and walking through this day by day.

  1. I’ve had April and your family on my heart lately. Now I know why. Praying constantly and always for healing.

  2. Out of the blue I thought to check for an update this morning and really hate to see this. Pease tell April that we will keep her in our thoughts and prayers as always but now specifically for relief from the pain and also a treatable answer to her lung problems. And praying for strength for her caregivers as well!

  3. April ( and Jonathan) I had a growing discomfort with seeing Your parents car at your house so often these days. I had lost track of your blog and upon reading it-realized that it was with good reason. I am so sorry and saddened to hear of your on-going difficulties. I think of you and your family often and I pray for good test results, healing, and a respite from all the pain you are enduring. I don’t know how to be of help but I am here and if someone would just tell me, I will do it. Thank you Jonathan for the updates. Continued prayers…

  4. Jonathan, as I was drift to work on Friday I was praying for April and I felt like God showed me that He had her in the palm of His hand. I am so sorry your family is having to go through all of this. Love and prayers from the Butlers

  5. Oh Johnathan, you and April continue to be so very “strong and courageous”! We pray for good test results, relief from pain, grace for the road you are traveling. Know you are thankful to have Donna and Everett with you. Hugs to Amber on her b’day and to Elizabeth and Harrison as well. May the Peace and Presence of Jesus be with each of you throughout this holiday season.

    1. As friends of the Solomon clan this update leaves on speechless other than to speak words of prayer to support April, Jonathan, their children and all kinfolk
